Before I Forget
This is your invitation to join a book club, to both read and discuss a current novel by a well known author. Detroit Reads “Before I Forget” by Leonard Pitts, Jr., is available at the Detroit Public Library and local bookstores. Book club discussions are now being formed at library locations throughout Detroit. Call 313-833-4000 for a location near you. Before I Forget is both an in-depth anatomy of black fatherhood and an absorbing, brilliantly plotted piece of fiction-a multigenerational road story that spans rural Mississippi in the ’40s, swinging South Central L.A. in the ’50s, the soul music scene of the ’70s, right up to present-day L.A., Vegas, and Baltimore. In this sweeping, ambitious yet accessible first novel, Leonard Pitts, Jr. steps forward as a major new voice in American fiction. His writing reveals a profound understanding of the difficulties facing black men as they grapple with their role as fathers-as well as the crucial importance of fulfilling that role. Clip this note and share it with friends, your church, your block club. Call 313-833-4000 for details, and your opportunity to meet Leonard Pitts in February at the Library.

Don’t miss LPJ’s first novel, Before I Forget. It’s the story of Mo Johnson; once upon a time, he was one of the most popular R&B stars of the 1970s. Now, he’s just someone who used to be. Mo has a hated father he hasn’t spoken to for 30 years who has terminal cancer, he has a son to whom he gave everything but attention, who has just been arrested for armed robbery and murder. Worse, he has early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Just 49 years old, and he’s just learned that he’s dying of a disease that will erase his memory, his very identity, that will take his life before it kills him. Before I Forget is about a man racing the clock, desperate to make peace with the ghosts of past and present, to make peace with his father and reconcile with his son before it’s too late.

Before I Forget is a man’s story, and Leonard Pitts, Jr. tells it with all the truth and passion we don’t always have the courage or confidence to express. I saw myself in this mighty book, strong and weak, but mostly human.”
— Eddie Levert, Sr., lead singer of The O’Jays, and author of
