arts leagueThe Arts League of Michigan has just moved into a new home in the former Harmonie Center building, 311 E. Grand River Ave. in downtown Detroit, now known as the Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center. The Carr Center is a state-of-the-art venue for the creation and presentation of the arts, dedicated to the African American experience within our multicultural community.
Motown Writers Network  is proud to be partnering with the Arts League of Michigan, Ladel’s Children’s Books Boutique, InsideOut Literary Arts Project, and the Wayne State Press to bring Detroit a first-of-its kind book club at the Carr, combining literary, visual, and performing arts.

October’s theme is “sharing our stories.” Upcoming events are:

Tuesday, October 6, 6:00 p.m.

Dr. Arthur L. Johnson, author of the award-winning memoir Race and Remembrance, kicks off the Book Club series. Dr. Johnson will lead a conversation about Detroit’s civil rights history.


Thursday, October 15, 6:00 p.m.

Ladels Children’s Books storytime. A chance for children and their families to learn together in an active, fun environment.


Tuesday, October 20, 6:00 p.m.

The renowned teen performance poetry troupe, Citywide Poets, will perform original  pieces and will help audience members create poems that tell their personal stories.

Thursday, October 29, 6:00 p.m.

Motown Writers Network presents member and local author Kateleen Washington. Washington will share the story of her struggle to escape a life of poverty and prostitution in Korea and to come to terms with her past after immigrating to the US.
