Music in the Break:

A Look at How We End and Begin

This two-day workshop is designed for poets interested in generating new poems or sequences of poems from exercises in the elegy, definition and ekphrastic poetic forms. Since how we end and begin language within a poem is crucial to the poem’s overall effectiveness, each class will begin with a lecture/conversation on how the line break can facilitate beautiful music in the poem. Participants will be asked to send five poems for the workshop and a 350 word statement about the current project they are working on or would like to work on.

Gloria House, Ph.D., Poetry

A Different Image: Inspiration from Broadside Legacy Poets

Participants in this workshop will read closely some of the most beautiful poems of the Black Arts Movement, mining the works for their brilliant gems of style, technique and vision. We will then reflect upon writings by workshop participants in light of the principles of craftsmanship we have observed in the poetry of the Broadside legacy poets Brooks, Lorde, Knight, Madhubuti, Randall and Sanchez.

Personal Writing: Editing Your Life

In the age of memoir, blogging, YouTubing and Tweeting, there is little about our personal lives that isn’t shared freely in the public realm. But what is really worth sharing with others?Writers will learn how to deploy creative writing tools to achieve human connection through personal writing. Writers will use peer critique and writing exercises to understand the difference between narcissism and powerful personal storytelling. The goal of the workshop will be to leave with three solid ideas for personal essays. ASSIGNMENT: Writers should arrive with 6 copies of a DRAFT of a personal essay/blog/column of not more than 700 words. Please, no erotica.

GENERAL WORKSHOPS OFFERED

Quraysh Ali LansanaWALKING THE DISTANCE OF YOUR VISION–Every neighborhood possesses sounds, smells, sights, and characters. Yet, often we bustle down the block taking those elements for granted, oblivious to change all around us. Employing sensory prompts, community awareness identifiers, and “verse journalism” techniques created by Pulitzer Prize winner Gwendolyn Brooks, this essay/exercise will empower students to see their neighborhood and neighbors through a different lens, offering them the awareness of their own power in changing the world, starting with their block. The notions of a concentration of place, how place and geography inform identity, and individual world view/relationship to others, the environment that creates elements of self. By examining where a poem takes place-with natural ties to social justice issues-students may examine together how geography and topography inform self, relations, etc., from both individual and classroom/community inquiry for all to experience.

About Idlewild

Idlewild is a vacation and retirement community in Yates Township located in a small rural northwestern part of Michigan near the southeastern border of Lake County. It was one of only a few resorts in the country where African-Americans were allowed to vacation and purchase property before this discrimination became illegal in 1964. Called the “Black Eden” from 1912 through the mid-1960s, Idlewild was an active year-round community and was visited by well-known entertainers and professionals from throughout the country. Famous Idlewilders include W.E.B. DuBois, Madame C.J. Walker, and Charles W. Chesnutt.
